Roy Schmidt

On a bright sunny, albeit down right cold day many gathered in a Lutheran Church in Onamia to pay tribute to a fallen WWII Veteran Roy Schmidt. Roy enlisted in the USMC in 1941 and served his country proudly for 12 years. Roy saw action with the Third Marine Division on such infamous places as Iwo Jima. In fact Roy was less than one half mile away from the original flag raising on the Island. The Onamia Color Guard was present as well as the Marine Color Guard. Over 100 cars made the trek out to the Cemetery to see Roy laid in his final place. We formed a flagline with 12 hardy PGR members ( 2 of whom were on their very first mission) as Roy's visitation progressed. When the funeral service began we stood down for a welcome warm up and rest. We then stood as the casket was taken from the church and placed in the hearse for the short ride to the Cemetery. All aspects of this service to honor a great American hero went very well and the family was extremely grateful for our presence. What a privilege to be able to pay respect to such an individual.
